We’re Bracing for What’s Next

In recent weeks, the pressure has intensified again. Fuel prices have surged sharply across Australia, with diesel reaching close to $3.30 per litre in some cities, and food charities warning that rising transport costs are making it even harder to get food to the people who need it most. ABC reported in late March that charities across the country were already grappling with growing demand at the same time their operating costs were climbing.

At Lighthouse Care, we are feeling that reality in real time, and it seems things are only going to get harder with majority of our suppliers introducing fuel levies. We are doing everything we can to continue providing free home delivery and affordable groceries.

In just 30 days, our home delivery orders increased by 30%, rising from 700 to more than 1,000 home deliveries. This is on top of the 10,000 families who access our service in store every month. That kind of growth is a clear sign of what families are facing. When fuel becomes unaffordable, when grocery prices stay high, and when every part of life costs more, families look for practical ways to save. For many, affordable groceries delivered to their door becomes not a convenience, but a lifeline.

Lighthouse Care Home Delivery Driver

The Reality of Food Relief in Australia

Like many charities, Lighthouse Care has been navigating intense operational pressure. The cost of doing good has gone up. Fuel, freight, wages, utilities, infrastructure and day to day logistics all cost more than they used to. Across the sector, many organisations are being forced to scale back, restructure or close altogether under the weight of rising costs and growing demand. National reporting over the past fortnight has shown exactly that tension playing out in food relief, with charities warning they are being squeezed from both sides.

As a fully self-funded charity, we do not have the luxury of simply absorbing those pressures without consequence.

One of the hardest decisions we have had to make was selling our warehouse in order to keep operating. It was not a decision we wanted to make, but it was necessary. In a climate shaped by rising interest rates and increasing operating pressure, it allowed us to protect the mission and keep serving families.

But selling the warehouse created a new challenge.

Why We Had to Sell Our Warehouse

If demand is rising, and if home delivery is becoming more important than ever, then we still need warehouse capacity. We still need room to store stock properly, move product efficiently, fulfil orders faster and build better systems that can handle the level of demand we are now seeing. So rather than step backwards, we are adapting. We are now upgrading the extra space behind our shop to become our main warehouse.

It means transforming back-of-house space into a facility that can support the growing volume of groceries moving through Lighthouse Care every week. It means improving the way we receive stock, store it, pack it and get it out the door. It means building systems that help us keep up with demand and create a stronger operational base for the future.

It is about whether you have the cold storage, workflow, packing systems and warehouse layout needed to meet real demand. It is about whether a charity can continue delivering dignity, affordability and consistency at scale while costs keep rising around it. It is about whether we are willing to innovate now so that families are not left waiting later.

And this next step a $500,000 warehouse upgrade is one of the most important we’ve ever taken .

We’re transforming our existing site into a fully functional warehouse and distribution hub a space that allows us to:

  • Pack and process more home delivery orders
  • Improve efficiency across our entire operation
  • Store food at scale, including fresh and frozen items
  • Reduce costs so we can keep groceries affordable
  • Serve more families, more consistently

For a self-funded charity, a project like this is significant, and if Lighthouse Care is going to keep showing up for the thousands of families who rely on us, we need facilities that match the moment we are in.

That is why your support matters so much.

This warehouse upgrade is not just about improving a building. It is about strengthening the engine room behind everything we do. It is about helping us create a smarter, more effective operation that can keep groceries affordable, keep deliveries moving and keep Lighthouse Care responding to a growing need in one of the toughest climates the food relief sector has faced in years.

The pressure on Australian families is real. The pressure on charities is real. But so is the opportunity to adapt, innovate and build something stronger.

Over the last 22 years of serving the community we have had to adapt and change the way we do things and we believe we have created a unique food relief model that is:

  • Scalable
  • Efficient
  • Sustainable
  • Accessible to everyone

A model that ensures families can still access quality food even when everything else is getting harder. We believe food relief in Australia needs to evolve, and we’re committed to being part of that solution.

Why Your Support Matters

We can’t do this alone. Every donation, every act of generosity, is helping build something bigger than just a building. You’re helping create:

  • More meals on tables
  • More families supported
  • More communities strengthened
  • More hope in a time when many are struggling

This warehouse upgrade will directly impact thousands of families every single week. And together, we can make sure Lighthouse Care continues to show up, stronger, more equipped, and ready for what’s ahead.
